Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 Review

The PES series has toppled from the lofty perch at the top of the football game league table in recent times. The question is can Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 stage an epic comeback and push for glory against the popular FIFA?
Within a number of minutes of playing Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 it becomes obvious until this is the biggest overhaul the series has had in a very very long time. There's no doubt Konami needed to make a move to combat EA's ascendancy with FIFA. Last year's releases were cancelled as being a mismatch using the great majority of critics declaring FIFA the winner and consigning PES on the wilderness. Amid EA boasting of the extremely successful release yet, with FIFA 2011 soaring on the top in the UK chart, PES 2011 takes on the field.
PES 2011 is virtually unrecognisable in comparison to PES 2010. For a start the pace that has always set the series apart and given it that arcade feel is finished. The gameplay may be redesigned and the biggest change will be the introduction of the power meter under the player which indicates the strength of passes, shots and also headers. Combined with a very  unassisted control of the ball you could send several early passes directly into touch. You really need to pick your passes carefully now, assigning the right amount of power and getting the direction right.
This new method is a true shock at first but once you overcome the original frustration you'll soon get the potential exciting. You can fire out fantastic diagonal long balls into space and slot high powered passes through narrow gaps to produce those essential goal opportunities. Interestingly the through ball has become retained but you'll need to pick the right time for it to put it to use or it's going to be effortlessly mopped up with the opposition defence.
A new iteration of a football game has a learning curve and yes it often proves tough to score at first. Generally this wears off with a few plays but PES 2011 you will have to develop all new approaches for putting the ball into the back in the net. Another huge change making the whole game feel different is that dribbling speed may be drastically reduced. It takes players more time and energy to bring the ball under control and even speedy players will battle to outrun the opposition while using ball at their feet. You may find yourself restricted to long shots until you can get those passing movements working.
On the other hand mazy dribbles out of your own half in to the opposition box are certainly not impossible. The trick strategy is now assigned towards the right stick and you'll chain tricks together to depart defenders flat that will create enough room for the goal scoring chance. Just be careful you don't try to get too cute because being over elaborate rarely results in a goal.
In relation to its stock modes PES 2011 offers in the Master League and Become a Legend options yet again. Both of them still feature an awkward menu system. It's not difficult to navigate it is just difficult to seem sensible of because some with the terms sound odd and things aren't necessarily grouped the way you would expect. If anything the menu method is superior to previous efforts and it certainly looks tidier nonetheless it remains a good distance off perfect.
You could also play in the UEFA Champions League or the South American Copa Libertadores competitions plus they are presented beautifully with all the right touches include them as feel authentic. There's also the possibility to generate your personal cup competitions however the big addition in regards to modes is the power to play an online version from the Master League.
The PES series has long been the top with regards to playing against actual human beings. There's no real replacement having a load of mates round and getting stuck right into a big PES session though the insightful online alternatives on offer here is impressive. Since the AI still is suffering from a bizarre mix of incredible skill and utter donkey-like behaviour (often inside same move) it really is far more rewarding to experience friends or perhaps strangers online.
PES 2011 still lacks some licenses so team names like North London remain together with some dodgy strips. You can edit each one of these things or locate a saved file online to edit them for you. As with last year's release you can also add chants, use your personal likeness for your Become a Legend mode and edit various names and strips. This year you could also create your own personal stadium, though in all honesty it appears doubtful that as well many individuals will bother.
The sound inside game continues to be improved. Officially licensed competitions are incredibly authentic and you'll hear appropriate teams chants from your stands for some clubs (but they do sound oddly muffled). The commentary remains pretty poor. They've ditched Mark Lawrenson and subbed on Jim Beglin to partner Jon Champion. They still create nonsensical or inappropriate lines quite often along with my first play through they conspired to speak as well which was seriously unpleasant. You'll get the usual mix of music tracks within the menus, they don't really seem especially relevant however a  soundtrack of football songs could be pretty painful.
Overall the presentation of Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 is great. The menus look streamlined, although sadly they can still prove perplexing when you dig a bit deeper. The intro movies and cinematics are excellent. As for the players, the likenesses are extremely good for the big names - in general the lesser known the player is on the world stage, the more unlikely they're going to look right. The animations are very polished, players battle the other more convincingly and there does appear to be a better variation.
Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 shows a real wish to compete for honours and regardless of the flaws it includes up plenty of content. This release continues to be better when played against humans but the online Master League is a great addition, combining single player depth with multiplayer gaming. It is clearly aiming for any more realistic feel for the pitch, of course, if only the off pitch details harmonized, it could be great. While the effort to slow things down and emulate real football is positive in some ways the previous rocket-paced end to finish craziness will likely be missed.
To sum up using a football analogy PES 2010 was a maturing squad of overweight superstars still competent at moments of person brilliance. PES 2011 represents the new youth team coming through and also this is their difficult first season. This is a game that's building for the future of the series.
